Every vial of bacteriostatic water is defined by one additive: benzyl alcohol at a concentration of 0.9%. Understanding what that ingredient does — and does not do — is the key to using the product correctly.
Benzyl alcohol is an aromatic alcohol used for decades as an antimicrobial preservative in laboratory and pharmaceutical-grade solutions. At 0.9% it is present in a small but effective amount: enough to inhibit bacterial growth inside the vial between uses.
The distinction matters. A bactericidal agent kills bacteria outright; a bacteriostatic agent stops them from multiplying. Benzyl alcohol at 0.9% is bacteriostatic — if a vial is contaminated through poor technique, the preservative slows the problem, it does not erase it. Aseptic handling remains essential: swab the septum, use a fresh sterile needle for every draw, and discard any vial with cloudy contents.
The concentration follows the USP monograph for bacteriostatic water: high enough to be reliably inhibitory across the in-use period, low enough to remain compatible with the widest range of laboratory preparations. It is a standardized figure, which is also why a certificate of analysis can verify it lot by lot.
